We all recognise design when we see it? When I see a carriage clock sitting on a mantelpiece, I know somebody designed it and it’s the same with everything else; a horses saddle, a motor car, or a camcorder. Even something as simple as a paper clip, requires mathematics’ and has to be considered, designed and manufactured before it comes into being. Furthermore, no one believes that the carved Presidents' heads on Mount Rushmore were the product of millions of years of wind and rain erosion; it was Man’s ingenuity that put them there. But whilst Man merely refashion pre-existing materials, he can only achieve it with the help of mathematics. However, maths appears in nature too.
Galileo said: ‘The Universe is written in the language of mathematics and its characters are triangles, circles and other geometrical figures, without which it is humanly impossible to understand a single word of it; without these one is wandering about in a dark labyrinth’.
The problem scientists have, is that 'mathematics' was not an invention of the human mind: it was a discovery. Like Mount Everest, it is just there and everything in nature conforms to these predetermined mathematical rules. They turn up in the shape of our DNA, in snail shells, the human body, trees, flower petals and the solar system. Clearly the flowers do not know about Pi, and yet they were in existence billions of years before Man. It is uncanny, but if there is a designer behind creation then He must surely have had access to a super calculator. Because without the laws of mathematics, we would not be here and neither would planet earth.
